Open Water Swimming with a pro, wherever you are
Open water is a different world from the pool: no lane ropes, no walls, cold water and changing conditions. A coach teaches you to acclimatise safely, sight without losing rhythm, breathe bilaterally and handle the nerves of a mass start.
Who it’s for
Pool swimmers making the move outdoors, triathletes, wild swimming enthusiasts and anyone training for an open water event.
What a session looks like
A safety briefing and acclimatisation, then technique drills for sighting, drafting and turning around buoys, and steady swimming with feedback, all within safe, supervised limits.
Where you can train
Supervised lakes, lidos and open water venues, or suitable beaches in safe conditions. Venue entry may be extra.
What to bring
A wetsuit (or swimwear in warmer months), a brightly coloured cap, goggles, a tow float and warm clothes for afterwards.
Open Water Swimming FAQs
Do I need a wetsuit?
For most of the year in the UK, a wetsuit is recommended for warmth and buoyancy. Your coach will advise for the conditions.
Is it safe to swim in open water?
With proper acclimatisation, supervision and the right venue, open water swimming is very safe. Your coach will always assess conditions first.
Are Trainow open water swimming coaches verified?
Yes. Before a coach goes live, Trainow reviews their identity, qualifications and insurance, plus safeguarding and DBS checks for anyone coaching children. Every session is rated by real people, so you can see how a coach performs before you book.
